Plateau Peace Media Network Saddened by Horrific Attacks, Calls for Immediate Security Measures and Calm

The Plateau Peace Media Network (PPMN) has said it is deeply saddened by the appalling attacks that unfolded on the night of December 24, 2023, in several remote villages of Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi Local Government Areas of Plateau State. The barbaric assaults, orchestrated by yet-to-be-identified assailants which left a trail of destruction and loss of precious lives.

In a statement jointly signed by the Coordinator Matthew Tegha and Marie-Therese Nanlong the Secretary, the Network expressed its condolences to the families affected by this gruesome attack.

“Our thoughts and sympathies go out to those who have lost their loved ones in this senseless act of violence.

“The Plateau Peace Media Network condemns, in the strongest terms, the violence unleashed upon the innocent residents of Bokkos and Barkin-Ladi. These communities have endured immense hardship, and it is disheartening to witness such brutality.

“While calling for calm, we advocate for a swift response from the Commissioner of Police, Plateau State Command, CP Okoro J. Alawari, and we recommend that immediate measures be taken to prevent further carnage. As advocates for peace, we call upon all relevant authorities to intensify security measures in these areas to safeguard the lives and properties of the residents. The relocation of the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operations (DC DOPs) to Bokkos LGA is a commendable move, and we implore the security forces to remain vigilant in the face of these threats.

“The findings from the assessment of the Police in Plateau State are devastating, with a total of Twelve (12) villages attacked, Two Hundred and twenty-one (221) houses set ablaze, Twenty-seven (27) motorcycles burnt, Eight (8) motor-vehicles destroyed, and a heartbreaking loss of over Seventy-nine (79) lives from Barkin-Ladi and Bokkos Local Government Areas.

“The Plateau Peace Media Network stands in solidarity with the affected communities and urges swift action to bring the perpetrators to justice. Our hearts go out to the people of Plateau State during this challenging time” the statement read.

The Network reiterated its commitment to supporting initiatives that foster peace, harmony, and unity on the Plateau.
