Operation Safe Haven Constitutes Peace Report Implementation Committee

In its effort to restore lasting peace in Bassa, Jos North and Jos South Local Government Areas of Plateau State that has been witnessing attacks and killings, Operation Safe Haven (OPSH) on Saturday 19th February, 2022 inaugurated a 26-man Committee for the Peace Report submitted to it in October, 2021 by a 36-man Committee.

While inaugurating the Committee headed by the former Chief Judge of Plateau State, Honorable Justice Daniel Longji (Rtd), the Commander Operation Safe Haven who doubles as the General Officer Commanding 3-Division Nigerian Army, Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Ali said the implementation Committee became pertinent following the recommendations of the 36-man Committee.
He said Members of the Committee were carefully selected and are persons of proven integrity and good track records drawn across the ethnic groups in the three Local Government Areas who he said he is optimistic they will work towards the actualization of lasting peace in the trouble areas and State at large.
He hinted that they are to come up with strategies, timeline and commence the implementation of the recommendations of the 36-man joint Committee Report which is with a view to addressing the perceived resentment leading to continuous violent attacks in all the identified communities.
He said they are to be briefing the Security outfit on the success of the implementation and an initial report is expected of it by the end of March, 2022.

The reeled out the terms of reference of the committee to include:

  • Draw out strategies for the implementation of the recommendations.
  • Determine achievable strategies and timelines for the implementation base on the Operation Safe Haven mission mandate.
  • Identify and phase the recommendations into short, medium and long terms for sequential order of implementation.
  • Consult widely with all stakeholders for effective collaboration during the execution process phases.
  • Suggest ways for resolution of grievances of any group over the implementation of any recommendations of the report likely to affect the communities or groups.
  • Advice on new issues of concern in the implementation process and suggest measures to address them.
  • Carryout periodic briefing on Monthly-basis after the inauguration of the implementation committee.
  • Identify milestones in order to evaluate the progress made in the implementation process.
  • Any other measure deemed necessary to the committee to ensure genuine resolution of the contending issues to encourage the groups or communities towards peaceful coexistence.

He appreciated Members of the Committee for accepting to serve the State in this capacity and to carryout the herculean yet important task.

The Brra Nggwe Rigwe, Rev. Ronku Aka He lauded the peace restorative efforts of the Commander OPSH and the setting up of the implementation Committee which he said is comprised of persons of uncompromising integrity.

Hon. Ishaku Joshua, Deputy Chairman Bassa LGA appreciated the Commander for ensuring the Bassa, Jos North and Jos South LGAs are returned to the path of peace and development.

The Director General of Plateau Peace Building Agency (PPBA), Mr. Joseph Lengmang described the Chairman of the Committee, Justice Longji as a man of impeccable character. He applauded the security agencies for working assiduously to restore peace in the State and Nation at large.

Gen. Jon Temlong (Rtd) urged the public to desist from shielding criminal elements in their Communities while charging government at all levels to identify Crisis Entrepreneurs and cut them of their trade to Achieve Lasting Peace.

He said peace is achievable and not a fairy tale if the Citizens are ready to sheath their swords and embrace each other.

Alh. Danjuma Khalid, Representative of JNI said humanity comes from God through Adam and Eve therefore there is no need fighting and killing each other. He said the idea of implementation of recommendations is a giant stride.
He urged the political class not to use the youths for violence saying youths are to be mentored and empowered to be better people and agents of peace.

Chairman of the Implementation Committee, Justice Daniel Longji in his acceptance speech said the committee will work assiduously on the recommendations toward achieving peace.
According to him, the Committee willl dissuade persons against unhealthy religious competition. He commended the Commander for being passionate about peace.
He urged Media Practitioners to focus on professionalism and objectivity in their reportage instead of reporting issues capable of inciting the people against each other.
