In order to reduce the numerous hardships faced by persons living with disabilities, rekindle hope out of their despair and give them sense of belonging in the society, Beautiful Gate Handicapped People Centre Jos, Plateau State in conjunction with Community and Rural Enhancement Initiative (CREI) on Thursday 16th June, 2021 donated Two Hundred and fifty (250) Wheelchairs and walking aids to the category of persons.
While donating the items to the Beneficiaries who were drawn from Kaltungo, Biliri, Balanga and Shongom Local Government Areas at the Kaltungo Stadium the Executive Director of the Centre, Chief Ayuba Burki hinted that the humanitarian intervention became expedient considering the condition of the people in line with the mandate of the Centre of ensuring that persons with disabilities are assisted when identified.
He encouraged them not to see their present predicament as a “kiss of death” but an obstacle waiting to be overcome and urged government, spirited individuals and other nongovernmental organizations to come to their aid and provide them with the necessary interventions.
He admonished them to use any assistance given to them which are aimed at reducing their situation judiciously to better their lives.
He gave an account how he contracted the Poliomyelitis at the age of 5 and how he was assisted with wheelchair for use in School back then. He said the donation was the highest ever done by the centre in a day since its establishment and said the Centre look forward to doing more to bring succour to people with disabilities and the less privileged in different ways.
He charged the beneficiaries to give greater attention to education, skill acquisition and legitimate ventures that will enable them to be useful as well as more beneficial to their families and the society at large despite their situation.
“It is important for us to stand up to help ourselves and accept the assistance that may come our ways from any quarter”
“Let us stand firm and endeavor to work hard to overcome our disabilities and help ourselves, though it will not be easy but it is a task that must be done” he said.
He appreciated the pivotal roles being played by the Traditional Rulers and Government at the local government level in the fight against polio and urged them not to relent but sustain the efforts.
He called on government at all levels not to neglect persons living with disabilities but make deliberate and concerted efforts to comprehensively rehabilitate all persons victimized by polio so they can live and make their modest contributions to national growth and development.
According to him, to achieve a viable Nation must be on deck and said that can only be possible if everyone is given the opportunity to achieve his/her potentials.
He said the 32nd President of the United States, Franklin D. Roosevelt didn’t allow his disability to discourage him but was visionary and purpose driven to had served four (4) tenure as President.
President/CEO of Community and Rural Enhancement Initiative (CREI), Evangelist Bitrus Dasar commended the gesture by the Centre and said God is using it to impact the lives of the people and demonstrate love to the less privileged.
The Mai Kaltungo, His Royal Highness Engr. Sale Mohammed lauded the Centre for identifying with his subjects and others from other Local Government Areas irrespective of their ethnic, religious and social backgrounds.
“You have brought immense joy to the hearts of our people and we are very grateful for this humanitarian gesture which will remain in our hearts forever” he said.
Some beneficiaries who couldn’t hide their tears appreciated the centre for assisting them in their most trying times and prayed God to open more doors in order for the Centre to reach more persons with disabilities and less privileged as it is accustomed to.
