What is the hope for the future of the common Nigerian today?
Over the years, the world has witnessed an unusual standstill, with acute hunger and starvation, striking from the north to the south; and from the east to the west like the rise and fall of the sun. Many dreams and aspirations were altered, countless plans rescheduled, numerous duties abandoned, thus bringing about a great shock to the whole universe. As if this was not enough, the plight of the poor was further exacerbated by the novel Corona Virus (COVID-19) pandemic which has foreground man’s weaknesses against their “wee” strength.
In developing countries like Nigeria, the pains brought about by the Virus were more excruciating than in developed countries where leaders and researchers saw it as an opportunity to extend their knowledge scope and put to bare their leadership acumen in guiding their citizens to navigate through the mayhem. Unfortunately, Nigeria’s backwardness in almost every aspect of governance is an impeccable proof that our leaders have been long dead to their leadership responsibilities. The downturn of the economy… the collapse of the Naira against its foreign counterparts… the daily rise in the prices of goods and services… insecurity, kidnapping and banditry in the north… ethno-religious clashes… threats of succession in the east and west… and even more have become popular news captions in the country.
The Plateau Central District of Plateau State is not left out of the malady. It has had its fair share of bad governance, and has recorded, for instance, so much ruins and woes in both the pre- and post pandemic era, all of which has dreaded the district’s educational, health, agricultural, creative and economic sectors. All of these are attributes of failed leadership. Emerging leaders are expected to take charge in bringing stability in every crisis time. This is one of the qualities that distinguished public leaders in the past who were equated to prophets and messiahs of their people.
In order to save the forlorn state of things in the Plateau Central District and to spare the dim hope of the poor masses from being squashed completely, the Plateau Central Youth Advocacy for Democracy and Good Governance (PLACEYADAGG) is calling on all public servants within the district to rise up to their full responsibilities and pace up their delivery of good governance that they promised the good people of the district. For therein lies the last hope of the common Nigerian!
