Who Deserves The Hangman’s Hammer?

By Nuru Shehu

Listening to governor Nyesome Wike’s recent outbursts on programme on the AIT, one could not help but to wonder if stating the truth on what transpired about the 2015 presidential elections, deserves such wanton attacks on the person of former governor, Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu of Niger state and or Wike’s pent ups and unfriendly disposition to the former governor.

Vociferous comments made by Wike while on set, threw up so much about his uncouth demeanor, quite unbecoming of a state chief executive.

As a matter of fact, those who watched the programme, were left to mourn the fate of truth and lament over what was clearly an over reaction for a belated issue. Even in the practice of common law which Wike is trained at, issues that have been overtaken by events of the past, are considered statute barred.

For crying out loud, the 2015 presidential election and all the issues pertaining it, are gone for good. Let’s by gone remain as such.

One striking but laughable thing Wike said that exposed the rashness in him was his call for the suspension of Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu from the party, (the PDP).

My few dispassionate posers for governor Wike and of course, anybody like Wike here are;

Who between Wike and Babangida Aliyu Should Be Suspended First?
Is it :-

(1). A spiteful sitting governor who insults the members of his party’s National Working Committee, (NWC) and refer to them as “tax collectors”?

(2). A sitting governor who does not respect the party that gave him a platform to win election as state governor but turns round to chides the leadership of the party at any given TV SHOW

(3). A sitting governor who has a hand in all party crises in all states of the country. This the party knows and have not spoken against or call his bluff.

(4). Beside all these, Wike is the only state governor in Nigeria who is so intoxicated and full of himself. On several occasions, he invites members of his party’s National Working Committee to castigate them openly and pour insults and invectives on them just to demean them for his own joy without giving a hoot.

On the flip side of the coin,
let’s look at the merits and or demerits in what Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu said.

The question which readily comes to mind is; What actually did the Chief Servant do or said that was wrong?

  1. Babangida Aliyu said the truth about the outcome of the 2015 Presidential elections. What he said was the truth. Jonathan lost the election because he reneged on the agreement between he and the PDP’s governors.

The outcome of the election across the country showed a near general rejection of Jonathan and his party.

To put it succinctly, attached are the results sheets from INEC.

Did Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu lied or committed any political sacrilege? Was his statement in line with the outcome of the 2015 Presidential election results as released by INEC?

The bitter truth which some people are not comfortable with is; did Babangida’s barefaced statement in the interview he granted tallied in line with the empirical truth in the results produced and released by INEC?

Why then the Hullabaloos in some quarters? Why the denial by some people of the knowledge of the agreement between Jonathan and the PDP’s governors?

Who is afraid of owning up to the truth? Those who are calling for Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu’s suspension from the party are those who should have been suspended long ago over their disrespect for the PDP and it’s leaders.

If the truth must be said, should any sane and reasonable person call for the head of the man who was bold, honest and truthful to say the truth and the whole truth, about what transpired?

Regrettably today, in this world of ours, bold men of honour, men of valour and impeccable standing are mercilessly shredded in pieces for standing alone and tall against deceit and falsehoods, while brash, mouthy men of easy virtue, deceit and disrespect are given red carpets honours so that falsehood can continue to ride rudely on the paved back of truths.

Should someone remind Wike and the powers behind and beside him that Nigerians have not forgotten how he rode to power on the crested shoulders and back of Goodluck Jonathan.

If today Wike is still dancing the rhythms from the drumbeats of his god father, we can only wish him well, but history and posterity are two strong fact checks that cannot be destroyed nor wished away.

Dr. Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu has said the truth. His comments were free and without any ambiguity.

He is a man of unwaivering commitment to the PDP and all of us should praise him rather than lampoon for for saying the truth.
