Nigeria Army Officers Wives Association (NAOWA), 3 Division Rukuba Chapter yesterday donated assorted materials to 176 orphans and vulnerable children in the North East Nigeria.
Our correspondent reports that the children between the ages of 4-18 years lost their parents in the prolonged insurgency in the north east were kept in House of RECAB Orphanage Jos.
Dr Dorcas Angbazo, wife of the General Officer Commanding 3 Division and the Coordinator NAOWA in the chapter, said that the gesture was in the spirit of army celebration.
She said that it was a week where the army show the humanitarian aspect of the military.
‘It is a week where the army share what it had achieved, its as well as reach out to members of the community.
“The General officer commanding 3 Division, Maj. Gen. Nuhu Angbazo supported NAOWA to show the humanitarian aspect of the military by coming to the orphanage.
“The orphanage have a large population of children from the north-east.
“We came to share the small token of what we brought from the barracks to celebrate and encourage them that in spite of what is going (insurgency), the future is bright,” she said.
She said that the visit was to encourage them to also continue to pray for the Nigerian Army so that there would be success in the fight against insurgency.
Director, House of RECAB Sam Akaakaa said that apart from accommodating and feeding the children, they also run a school where the children are taught.
Akaakaa who appreciated NAOWA for the gesture, said that the centre was helping the children come out of trauma.
The director said that the centre was bedeviled with a lot of challenges including feeding the children and building a fence around.
He however, appealed to members of the public to make out time to visit the children.
“What some of them need is just attention that has eluded them. They need somebody to talk to them, tell them that the future is still bright in spite of the present challenge,” .
