Us Embassy Trains Jos Museums Staff on Digitization

United States of America Embassy in Nigeria under its US Arts Envoy Museum Digitization project on Monday began the training of staff of Jos Museums on digitization of Museum collections.

Speaking at the occasion ,Malia Heroux ,Assistant Cultural Affairs Officer of the US Embassy in Nigeria said the training is to teach Nigerians on how to preserve Artifacts ,Monuments and cultural assets digitally .

She said “A museum is a bank of cultural resources, a collection of memories about man’s way of life, and progress over time. Museums are places where history is made tangible. Museums are memory banks that remind us of our past, inspire our present, and help us to plan for the future.

Nigeria is blessed with artifacts , Monuments and that is why we are training the workers on how to preserve them digitally , she added that not every body can visit Nigeria so we would teach them how to share it in an easier fashion .

At the end of the training ” We are hopeful that it will help to enhance the knowledge of professionals in this field, improve the storage, display, and preservation of museum collections across Nigeria and reignite public interest in Museums.”.

Acting Director General of National Commission for Museums and Monuments Abdulkerim Oshioke Kadiri in his welcome address said digitization has become the future of all Industries , especially Museums ,it does not only provide security for our priceless objects it also serves as references for research and conservation of these objects.
Trainings , Interest and policy shift can easily enhance this new trend of digitization. This training therefore is a welcome development that hopes to open new frontiers for National commission for Museums and Monuments to develop the inventory of our collections , and also to train the trainer that will inculcate digitization to others in their various stations .
The commission is one of the front burner for the return and restitution of African object illegally taken abroad , this training will go a long way in assisting with detail of our collections to enable us achieve this feat . This is going to be the first stone towards building a world class robust and independence database of our collections .
