UNICEF has Spent N2.4 Billion on Projects in Plateau State in 5 Years – Chief Field Officer

United Nation Children Fund (UNICEF), has said that it has spent 2.4 billion naira on various projects in the past five years in Plateau .
Chief Field Officer Bauchi UNICEF Bhanu Pathak, stated this in Jos the Plateau state capital on Thursday when he paid a courtesy call on the State Governor, Hon. Simon Lalong.
He said UNICEF is committed to tackling challenges of education, health ,child protection and Nutrition in Plateau, adding that recently the Fund supported health sector governance and leadership through funding and technical assistance for State Strategic Policy and Plan development.
“As you all know, UNICEF is an organisation working for the rights of children and women, and one of its cardinal objectives is to ensure that these category of people have access to basic social services.
UNICEF provides support to the health sector through its core funds .
“We are working with the state ministry of Women Affairs Justice ,Education and Health to achieve our target , We have carried out capacity building of 57 local government management team members using the district health modules to improve health managerial skills in the two focal LGAs of Riyom and Shendam and also carried out focused maternal new born and child health support in these same LGAs .
“We have ongoing programmes in Plateau and we hope to do more for the state .”
He commended the Plateau state government for their efforts at payment of counterpart funds .
“I must commend the Governor Simon Lalong led administration for payment of counterpart funds but i am calling on you to do more .
“UNICEF is determined to provide a secured environment where children and women live devoid of diseases.”
Our correspondent reports that recently UNICEF constructed 52 Ventilated Improved Pit (VIP) toilets and 10 motorised boreholes in Plateau to address the challenges of Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) in the state.
The projects,which are in communities in Shendam and Riyom Local Government Areas, were in the third phase of the Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform Programme (WSSSRP).
Responding Governor Simon Lalong , who was represented by his deputy Sonnie Tyoden thanked UNICEF for their support and said the APC led government is always willing to partner with them to provide dividends of democracy to the people of the state .
