In a decisive security operation on 28th April 2025, troops of the 3 Division/Operation Safe Haven successfully intercepted and dismantled a notorious car snatching syndicate operating within Jos, Plateau State.
Acting on credible intelligence, troops on patrol around the Federal Low-Cost Estate in Jos South Local Government Area intercepted an ash-coloured Opel Vectra with two occupants at the Lalong Gate. On sighting the troops, the driver made an attempt to evade arrest by executing a sharp detour but was swiftly halted.
While troops were questioning the suspects, the driver made a reckless attempt to escape by trying to overrun a military patrol motorcycle. Troops responded immediately, neutralizing the threat and preventing further danger to lives and property.
During preliminary investigation, the surviving suspect confessed to being part of an armed robbery syndicate specialized in car theft. He revealed that he had returned to Jos from Katsina State just a day earlier to carry out criminal activities. A search of the intercepted vehicle yielded a security agency identity card used to bypass checkpoints and multiple car master keys, typically used to access stolen vehicles.
Subsequent follow-up operations led troops to the gang’s hideout in Corner Shagari, Angwan Rogo, within Jos North LGA. There, a fabricated pistol was discovered hidden in the ceiling. In a further development, the suspect volunteered to lead troops to another accomplice’s location. However, during the operation, he made a sudden attempt to disarm a soldier and escape. Troops acted swiftly and neutralized the suspect before any harm could occur.
Operation Safe Haven has reaffirmed its commitment to ridding Plateau State of criminal elements. Security forces continue to pursue leads to apprehend remaining members of the syndicate and ensure the safety of law-abiding citizens across the region.
