Plateau State Government has backed the initiative of trauma healings among widows, orphans and children at the on-going trauma healing training for heads of Non-Governmental Organizations (NGO) in the state. The European Union is sponsoring the training through Apurimac Onlusin Nigeria while two other NGOs are serving as project coordinators.

Mrs Olivia Dazymem who is the Plateau State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development spoke of Government support on Wednesday at the inauguration of the three day workshop holding in Jos where forty four NGO’s and civil society groups are being trained on trauma management during crisis. Dazymem who stood in for Governor Jonah Jang assured the organizers of the State’s backing in ensuring that the program reaches the rural areas with emphasis on areas affected by crisis.

The commissioner said “Women and children are always at the receiving end in violence, the girl child is the most vulnerable, therefore, they should be given special consideration in this trauma healing program such as these.” She voiced out her worries over the impact the crisis have had on many young girls who lost parents in the crisis as some have taken into prostitution to cater for themselves.

The project director of the training who is also the country representative of Apurimac, Mr Godwin Okoko said that the program is designed to create awareness to NGO’s and the civil societies on the negative effect of trauma during conflict. He enjoined participants to make use of the skills learnt to bring succour to people who were affected by the crisis and still have negative memories of the unfortunate occurrence. Okoko said that the program will focus on Riyom, Barkin Ladi, Jos South and Jos North Local Government Areas (LGAS’s) that have witnessed crisis.
