The 23rd of June is designated by the United Nations as International Widows Day, intended to draw the attention of governments and the entire humanity to the state and plight of widows across the globe.
The UN says there are over 285 million widows worldwide and the widows day focuses attention on the need to ensure that the denial of the rights of widows is reversed, ending social stigmatization, and embedding policies and legislation that promote the empowerment of widows for meaningful lives and livelihood.
Senator I. D. Gyang says he has long been conscious of the need to empower widows
given their vulnerability and susceptibility to discriminatory and harmful practices including denial of the right to inheritance.
It would be recalled that Senator Gyang undertook the empowerment of 500 widows in the six local governments of Plateau North Senatorial District, to enable them engage in varied income-generating activities.
Senator Gyang says terrorism and violent attacks are major contributors to the increasing number of widows in Nigeria which calls for decisiveness on the part of the government and the security agencies to combat insecurity.
The Senator says he will continue to voice out for the vulnerable including seeking empowerment for widows and orphans.
