REP ID GYANG’S MOTION ON A MATTER OF URGENT PUBLIC IMPORTANCE  ON THE RESURGENCE OF VIOLENT ATTACKS AND KILLINGS IN PLATEAU STATE

REP ID GYANG’S MOTION ON A MATTER OF URGENT PUBLIC IMPORTANCE  ON THE RESURGENCE OF VIOLENT ATTACKS AND KILLINGS IN PLATEAU STATE AND IMPLICATIONS ON NATIONAL SECURITY.
Thursday 15/03/18,

The motion taken at Plenary of the House of Representatives drew the attention of the House to the resurgence of violent attacks by Herdsmen in Plateau State. The killings rather than abate, are escalating.

The motion expressed  concern that the attackers showed no respect to the President on his visit to the State, such that while he was being hosted to a Town Hall meeting, communities in Bokkos and Bassa Local Government came under herdsmen attacks.

The House took note that the military led Operation Safe Haven in Plateau State has the mandate of enforcing law and order and securing the lives and property of law abiding citizens. Their presence notwithstanding, the Killer herdsmen are still having a field day and sacking whole communities and villages.

The House was informed that the latest round of attacks and killings is concentrated on Daffo and Kwall/ Miango axis of Bokkos and Bassa Local Governments involving the dead of 45 & 29 persons respectively all of whom were given mass burial.

Rep Gyang pointed out  that the attacks had spilled over to Dong a suborb  of Jos North leading to the burning down of a COCIN Church building along the Wildlife Park- Rafiki neighborhood.

Rep Gyang lamented that the herdsmen attacks seem to be defying all known theories and practice  of conflict resolution as no sooner had communities agree to peacefully coexist than the attacks recur.

Rep ID Gyang observed that if urgent steps were not taken against the violent attacks, it could degenerate and escalate. This according to him,  will complicate the security situation in the nation.

The House adopted the prayers of Rep ID Gyang as it’s  Resolution on the motion by  urging  the government to:

1). Step up measures at enforcing law and order to stem the tide of violent attacks and bloodletting in Plateau State by disarming the killer herdsmen.

2). Recover all farmlands under occupation and ensure that persons displaced by violent attacks repossess their ancestral habitat, properties and farmlands.

3). Mandate NEMA to provide relief materials to the displaced victims.

The House observed a one minute silence in memory of the dead.
