With less than five months to the 2019 general election, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Plateau State yesterday said it had so far taken delivery of 255,000 permanent voter cards (PVCs) from April 2017 to March 2018 in the state.
INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner in the state, Mallam Husseini Halilu Pai, disclosed this during a meeting with registered political parties in the state.
Pai said the commission received from April to December, 2017 a total of 133,000 permanent voter cards out of which 44,147 had been collected while from January to March 2018, a total of 122,000 permanent voter cards had been delivered to the state.
According to him, the PVCs had been distributed to all the 17 local government areas of the state.
He cautioned political party leaders to ensure that nobody collected the PVC for another person by proxy.
“The collection of the PVC will be a continuous process up to the time of general election and we call on all those who have registered and are yet to collect theirs to go to their various local government areas to collect them.”
While addressing about 30 representatives of political parties, which include PDP, AD, PPA and ADP, among others, said the meeting was to create awareness towards ensuring that INEC provided a level playing ground for the conduct of peaceful, transparent and free and fair elections in the state.
“INEC has the responsibility to monitor and observed all the primaries of political parties and as such you’re to all inform INEC about your venues, date and time.”
He said INEC cannot succeed in conducting free and fair elections without the support of the political parties, adding that INEC was working hard to improve on its electoral process.
