Plateau State government said yesterday that it has distributed food items worth over N50 million to support the Muslim community during this month of Ramadan.

Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Barrister Yusuf Gambo Hawaja, said the gesture was in line with Governor Simon Lalong’s welfare policy. Hawaja said the money was used to purchase rice, millet and sugar and that they were given to the Muslim Ummah at the central mosque, the Jos Maximum Prison and orphanages. Others who benefited include persons with disabilities and vigilante groups.

Hawaja urged Muslims to use the Ramadan period to pray for the state and the nation, while appealing to entire people of the state to support the administration’s programmes to achieve results.

Deputy Chief Imam of the Jos Central Mosque, Ustaz Ghazali Ismail Adam, said the Muslim Ummah in the state appreciate the gesture and received it in good faith. “We wholeheartedly receive this and we appreciate it. We will judiciously distribute the items to those that they are meant for,” he said. Ustaz Ghazali further appealed to well-to-do individuals to support less privileged members of the society.

Also speaking, representative of the Controller of Prison, Plateau State Command, Deputy Controller James Lander, expressed happiness over the gesture, saying it will go a long away in alleviating the plight of some of the inmates.

An inmate at the Jos prison, Malam Isyaku Salihu, said, “we are very happy, not because the governor sent the food items, but that he remembered us even in detention. We will continue to pray for him to succeed.”
