Professor Ishaya Tanko, a Professor of computer Science with over 20 years post PhD in computer Science and over 30 years of professional, academic and scholarship research leadership today 1/12/2021 assumes office as the 10th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos.
An alumnus of the University set 1992, department of Mathematics,the Vice Chancellor, recalled fun memories while an Undergraduate student at university of Jos, and promise to uphold the the vision of developing the University to a global standard.
The acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Goziem Ejikeme describes Prof. Tanko as God-fearing, humble and honest academic, wishing him well.
Prof. Tanko Ishaya in his acceptance speech describes the University as a centre for solving societal problems but laments that the quality of graduates and research in the Nigerian university system have been an issue of concern.
The Vice Chancellor also recalled that the University system in Nigeria indeed has a history of massive breakthrough but today, Nigerians struggle to attend University education in Ghana, a sad situation described by Prof. Tanko Ishaya
while recalling the growth of the University of Jos, prof. Tanko Ishaya says Unijos with about 52,000 can only accommodate 5000 students making most students to stay outside the campus hence the need for peace co- existence with neibouring community. “we shall continue to create a conducive academic excellence and innovation with local, national and global impact.”
The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Tanko explained that his priorities will be the immediate resumption of PG programs ( Masters & PhD.), recalled that, Academic staff have withdrawn the service of their Members from Post graduate studies.
other pointers of the new VC commitment centred on the welfare of Academic staff stressing that ” Academic staff are doing a great sacrifice to the Nigerian state as their salaries can hardly take them Home”
Prof. Tanko promised to run an all inclusive administration in the University of Jos. promising that he will create a platform through which staff can give immediate Feedback to his office directly.
lastly, the VIce Chancellor calls on all and sundry to put hands on deck to advance the University of Jos.
The event was witnessed by members of University Council, senate, the Emir of Zuru and the general Public.
