English Premier League players will have the names on the back of their jerseys replaced with ‘Black Lives Matter’ during the opening round at the season’s restart.

“We, the players, stand together with the singular objective of eradicating racial prejudice wherever it exists, to bring about a global society of inclusion, respect, and equal opportunities for all, regardless of their colour or creed,” the players said in a statement released by the league.

“This symbol is a sign of unity from all players, all staff, all clubs, all match officials and the Premier League #blacklivesmatter #playerstogether.”

“The Premier League believes there is no room for racism, anywhere #NoRoomForRacism,” the statement added.

The English Premier League is set to resume on Wednesday June 17 following a three-month hiatus due to the coronavirus pandemic.

This approach comes amid global protests against racial injustice in the U.S. following the death of George Floyd, a black man, who died on May 25 in police custody in Minneapolis.
