Plateau Youth G-17 Peace and Progressive Forum takes Study Tour to Benue State House of Assembly, meets Benue Speaker and Deputy Governor

The Benue State House of Assembly has expressed readiness to share it’s experience on passage of the Open grazing prohibition and ranches establishment law with any state legislature wishing to Domesticate it. Speaker of the House Hon. Terkimbi Ikyange stated this Tuesday when Plateau youth G-17, Peace & progressive forum on a study tour of states with the open grazing prohibition law paid him an advocacy visit at the Assembly complex Makurdi.

Mr Ikyange who acknowledged similarities of fate suffered in the Fulani-Farmers clashes in Benue to that of Plateau justified the qualification of the youth group to propose a bill to their Assembly for passage in order to help broker peace. He refuted the claim that the Benue law was targeted at victimizing the Fulanis explaining that the law as passed,assented to and being implemented was in line with international best practices and applicable to all.

The speaker further explained that though there were pockets of challenges in the passage of the law, its few weeks of implementation has come with huge successes assuring that the state is the steady line progress to guarantee greater success. While commending the plateau youths for their courage towards proposing similar law for their State Mr Ikyange thanked them for also lending their voices to success of the Benue experience.

Earlier, leader of the delegation Mr Danja-Yaks Gyang said the visit was to congratulate the Assembly and government for successful passage and implementation of the law with a view to studying it for onward proposal to the Plateau state house of Assembly for consideration and passage. Mr Danja-Yaks said the delegation is currently on study tour of all states that have passed the law with special interest on the Benue experience due to similarities of fate being suffered in the hand of “unknown” Fulani herdsmen and sued for support.

Highlight of the visit was the presentation of the Benue Bill to the the plateau youth G-17 by the clerk of the house While accepting the bill, the leader of the delegation thanked the principal officers& promised to study it carefully.
