The Senate of Plateau State University, Bokkos, has made history by appointing Associate Professor Keziah Ayuba as the university’s first female Deputy Vice Chancellor. This significant appointment took place on September 26, when she was named Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administration, succeeding Associate Professor Jurji Nengak Gomos, who has completed two terms in office.
Mrs. Ayuba’s appointment was confirmed during a valedictory session held by the university’s Senate in honor of Prof. Moses Pyefa, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs, and Associate Prof. Gomos. While Prof. Pyefa was unanimously reappointed for another two-year term, Associate Prof. Gomos was ineligible for reappointment due to university regulations limiting tenure.
The motion to appoint Mrs. Ayuba was introduced by Mr. Adepo Adeyanju, Head of the Department of Mass Communication, and she was unanimously endorsed by the Senate. She was nominated alongside Dr. Emmanuel Nnadi, Head of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, who graciously stepped aside in support of her candidacy.
Prof. Shedrack Best, the Chairman of the Senate and Acting Vice Chancellor of the university, presided over the voice vote that resulted in her unanimous selection. Following a similar process, Prof. Pyefa’s renewed appointment was met with accolades from Senate members, who praised his reliability and dedication. Mr. Yakubu Ayuba, the university’s Registrar, corroborated this sentiment, recalling his involvement in Prof. Pyefa’s recruitment screening in 2011.
Prof. Best also commended Associate Prof. Gomos for his substantial contributions to the growth of PLASU, having been among the first cohort of 40 academic staff. He highlighted Gomos’s humility and conflict resolution skills, noting that his presence will be greatly missed within the university community. In response, Associate Prof. Gomos expressed his heartfelt appreciation for the support he received throughout his tenure and affirmed his willingness to assist the university in any capacity in the future.
Mrs. Ayuba, in her acceptance speech, expressed gratitude for her appointment and committed to dedicating herself to the continued development of Plateau State University.
