In a bid to make the game of Scrabble more attractive, impactful, and rewarding, the Plateau State Scrabble Association has rolled out a series of activities aimed at revitalizing the sport across the state.
Speaking to our correspondent in Jos, the Plateau State capital, Chairman of the Association, Mohammed Abbas, shared his administration’s vision of rebuilding and elevating Scrabble in the state. He emphasized a renewed focus on youth development, noting that youth Scrabble, once dominant, will be revived through structured programmes that identify, nurture, and transition young talents into top-tier senior players. This, he said, is essential to ensure a steady replacement for aging champions and to sustain the sport’s growth.
“Our talent hunt won’t be limited to Jos,” Abbas revealed. “We have activities lined up for each Local Government Area in Plateau State. Plans are already underway to inaugurate a Board for the Pankshin Scrabble Club and to host a major tournament in Pankshin. This will not only attract new talent but also establish a team of Trustees to oversee the sport’s development in the area.”
While youth development is a primary focus, the Chairman assured that senior players will not be left behind. The Association plans to organize high-stakes tournaments across the state with attractive prizes to encourage competitive play and raise the standard of the game.
To actualize this vision, Abbas outlined a comprehensive lineup of activities, including Youth Competitions, School Championships, the Top 10 Championship, Inter-Club Competitions, and regular Coaching Classes. He also highlighted the upcoming inauguration of the Pankshin Board, the organization of major and national retreats, and a Summer Camp designed specifically for children.
The Association is also working on a training schedule that will see new players trained by the State Coach at least once a week, ensuring consistent skill development.
Barrister Chuwang Paul, 1st Vice Chairman of the Association expressed satisfaction with the role Scrabble plays in educational and national development. “Scrabble sharpens vocabulary and mental acuity in children, improves their spelling skills, and enhances overall academic performance,” he said.
With this ambitious agenda, the Plateau State Scrabble Association is set to make significant strides in rebranding and expanding the game across the state.
