Plateau state government yesterday said it will soon privatise waste management to ensure prompt and efficient waste disposal. Commissioner for environment and mineral development Hon Adullahi Abbas, made this known while speaking at a stakeholders meeting on waste collection in the state organised by the ministry.
He said,” The Plateau State government in its bid to allow citizens participation and in line with the global principle of the polluter pays, which also gives citizens a voice in environmental cleanliness and health, has approved the privatization and commercialisation of waste collection in Jos /Bukuru metropolis. ”
“The programme aims at engaging reputable private waste collectors to collect refuse from all tenements in Jos and Bukuru at a monthly token fee and discharging same in designated collection points. ” “The metropolis shall be carved into zones and assigned to successful private operators for their operations so the ministry is tirelessly working towards a smooth take off of this programme in January 2018 .’
Abbas also said” As stakeholders, we invited you to rub minds on the intentions of government and to solicit your support towards the implementation and success of the programme, I urge you to feel free to bare your thoughts on this noble programme of Gov Simon Lalong led administration. ”
“Our governor Simon Lalong is determined to better the lives of citizens of the state and I call on all to continue to support him at all times. “
