Plateau killings: State police a panacea to Nigeria insecurity – Bot
By Golok Nanmwa ,Jos
Former Chief of Staff to Ex-Governor Jonah Jang and Plateau North Senatorial aspirant, Hon. Francis Bot at the weekend said decentralization of Nigeria security apparatus to provide State police is the panacea to security woes in the country.
He lamented that villagers made up of children and women are perishing on daily basis with several others languishing at the Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) camps across the state due to persistent attacks by killer herdsmen.
Hon. Bot disclosed this at the weekend while submitting his expression of Interest and nomination forms to contest Plateau North Senatorial seat at the State Secretariat of PDP in Jos, Plateau state.
“I am of the firm believe that the best way to solve the insecurity in Nigeria is to allow states have their police. Apart from that, we should have a security system where institutions can have their own security network. Banks should be allow to train their staff to protect their banks, It don’t need to use Federal Police.
“We should have private security, we should have state security with the federal security supervising all other components of security in the country. If security is decentralize and government at the centre has a different interest, pursuing an agenda then there will be insecurity.
“But it will be difficult for the whole state to pursue the agenda of insecurity and a state that allowed her security outfit to be manipulated by the governor or the executive, the national security will now come in to checkmate and give sanction.”
Bot lamented that with daily killings in rural communities, impunity and poverty level of the country will grow to an uncontrollable stage as people will be saying foodstuff to buy what they will protect themselves.
“What is happening now, the killings in the villages is very unfortunate, the people need protection and if this continue, impunity will continue to grow. Apart from that poverty will go deeper in Nigeria, people will have to sell their food to buy what they will protect themselves and that will not be proper.
“Government should be able to provide security for the people so that people will use the little they have to feed themselves, educate themselves and to take care of their health rather than thinking of protecting themselves.”
He said it was his personal motivation and encouragement on the part of the people to join the senatorial race and not coming to hold sway for Senator Jonah Jang who has declared for Presidential election as it is being insinuated by his opponents.
“I am motivated by my personal desire to serve the people and I was also encouraged into it by the people themselves because they have seen in me the potential of fair and credible representation to tackle the security challenges that has ravaged the zone through good legislation.
“In politics there is always campaign of calumny, I don’t think myself and Baba Jang have sat and discussed, the baseless assertion that i am holding sway to Jang is just to mar this project. I believe that Jang is a man of honour and integrity and he wouldn’t want to discuss such a thing with me.”
He also called on people of the state to support the PDP at all times
