A coalition of election observers, under the aegis of the Nigeria Network for Peace and Good Governance, has lauded the Plateau State Independent Electoral Commission (PLASIEC) for its successful conduct of the October 9, 2024 Local Government Elections.
In a press statement signed by its spokesperson, James Shalom, the group commended PLASIEC for maintaining a peaceful and transparent electoral process across the state, despite some initial challenges with the late arrival of materials in certain polling units.
Shalom noted that the electoral process—from polling to the announcement of results at ward levels—was generally smooth, orderly, and peaceful.
The observers highlighted that the elections were conducted without incident across key local government areas, including Pankshin, Mangu, Bokkos, Kanam, Jos North, Wase, Kanke, Jos South, Shendam, and Quan’pan, as well as all other local councils in the three senatorial zones.
The group emphasized the absence of violence, voter intimidation, or result manipulation, attributing the success to the commitment of local communities, who took ownership of the process to safeguard their votes and ensure the outcome reflected the people’s will.
Shalom also praised PLASIEC officials for their professionalism and commitment to transparency, noting that the decision to extend voting hours in areas affected by the delayed arrival of materials allowed more citizens to exercise their franchise.
This proactive measure, he said, further underscored the commission’s dedication to upholding the integrity of the elections.
The group expressed satisfaction that various key stakeholders, including a former governor, have also commended PLASIEC for the fairness and transparency of the exercise and the election was characterized with a large turn out of voters across the three Senatorial Zones.
The observers also applauded Governor Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang for fostering a conducive atmosphere for the elections and equipping PLASIEC with the necessary logistics to ensure the polls were conducted in line with legal provisions.
Shalom noted that the election marked a significant milestone in Plateau State’s democratic journey, as it is the first time the state has witnessed such a credible and inclusive electoral process across all 17 local government areas, reflecting the true wishes of the people without any disruptions.
