Nzem Berom 2025: Gbong Gwom Jos Celebrates Berom Women’s Resilience and Role in Nation Building

As part of the 2025 Nzem Berom cultural celebration, the Gbong Gwom Jos and Chairman of the Plateau State Council of Chiefs and Emirs, His Majesty Da Jacob Gyang Buba, CFR, has paid glowing tribute to Berom women, commending their resilience, cultural leadership, and contributions to peace and nation-building.

Speaking at the Berom Women’s Symposium held at the Tamarald Event Centre in Jos, Plateau State, His Majesty described Berom women as the backbone of their communities. He praised their courage and unwavering commitment to cultural preservation, especially during times of crisis.

“Our women have shown uncommon strength and wisdom in holding families and communities together. They have been a voice for peace and a light during dark moments,” the Gbong Gwom remarked.

The symposium brought together women from across Beromland, cultural leaders, and academics to reflect on the evolving role of women in preserving and promoting Berom heritage. His Majesty urged women to continue leading by example and to resist the erosion of cultural values by foreign influences.

“Your leadership in culture, home-building, and peacekeeping must be sustained. Do not be ashamed of your heritage—wear it with pride,” he advised.

Expressing concern over the decline in the use of the Berom language among younger generations, the Gbong Gwom called on women to champion the revival of the language within families and communities.

The event was chaired by Ngo Professor Christiana Best, who praised the resilience and contributions of Berom women to the development of society. A compelling keynote address by Dr. Henry Gyang Mang titled “Celebrating the Prowess, Gallantry, and Resilience of Berom Women: Past and Present” spotlighted the remarkable achievements of Berom women across generations.

The symposium featured cultural displays, storytelling sessions, an exhibit of traditional artifacts, and testimonials from both Berom and non-Berom personalities. A special segment titled “My Journey as a Berom Woman Leader” was presented by Ngo Florence Jambol, former President of the Berom Women Development Association (BEWDA).

Goodwill messages came from distinguished guests including Her Excellency Ngo Josephine Piyo, Deputy Governor of Plateau State; Hon. Justice Jummai Chundung Sankey, OFR, Justice of the Supreme Court; Barrister Olivia Dazyam, Chairperson of the Plateau State Gender and Equal Opportunities Commission; Dr. Kachollom Gang, Commissioner for Higher Education; and Ngo Abigail Banga, current BEWDA President.

They collectively called for increased support for women, recognition of their leadership roles, and the prioritization of education by parents as a pathway to societal advancement.

The symposium also hosted impactful panel discussions, reinforcing the role of Berom women as central figures in cultural sustainability and community development.
