The Berom community in Plateau State honored the 10th substantive Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos during the 2024 annual Nzem Berom Festival, celebrating arts and culture. Attended by notable figures from diverse professional backgrounds, the event showcased performances and the vibrant cultural heritage of the Berom people, who are among the largest ethnic groups in central Nigeria.
The distinguished host and paramount ruler, His Majesty the Gbong Gwom Jos, Da Gyang Buba CFR, graciously welcomed the guests, among whom was the special guest, Prof. Tanko Ishaya, and affirmed his steadfast support for the University in all its pursuits.
During his address, the special guest, the Vice Chancellor of the University of Jos, expressed condolences to the Berom community for the recent loss of a revered elder, Gwom Kabong Da Justice (Rtd) A. Sha.
The VC also commended His Majesty, the Gbong Gwom, on his 15th year anniversary on the throne, attributing his peaceful reign to the progress and prosperity witnessed in Plateau state. He lauded the initiation of the Wurom Legacy Trust Fund, anticipating its positive impact on various sectors of the economy.
Moreover, the Vice Chancellor, Professor Tanko, expressed gratitude for the strong working relationship and support from the Berom community, which has many of its sons and daughters employed in various sectors of the University. Additionally, the Vice Chancellor acknowledged the harmonious coexistence between the university and the Plateau host community, reaffirmed the University’s ongoing support, and encouraged substantial donations to ensure the project’s success.
The ceremony culminated in a momentous tree planting by Professor Tanko Ishaya, representing a pledge towards environmental rejuvenation and the fight against global warming. Distinguished academics from the University in attendance with the Vice-Chancellor were Professor I.C Pam, the Sports Committee Chairman of the University of Jos, and other esteemed colleagues.
