NIOB President Bemoans Collapse of a three-storey building in Abuja

The President of the Nigerian Institute of Building (NIOB), Bldr Prof Yohana Izam has bemoaned the collapse of a three-storey building under construction in the Kubwa area of Abuja describing it as another avoidable national embarrassment.

Speaking on the recent collapse, Bldr Izam expressed worry at the poor state of regulation of building sites noting that the combined effect of quackery and the prevalence of substandard materials remains an issue of great concern to the Institute.

Bldr Izam who double as the Vice Chancellor of the Plateau State University Bokkos while commending the officials of the National Emergency Management (NEMA) for their rescue efforts at the scene of the collapse however expressed regrets that some lives have already been lost.

While calling on the FCDA to thoroughly investigate this unfortunate development, the President reiterated the commitment of the NIOB to the pursuit of professionalism in the Building industry; adding that the recent inauguration of the 7th CORBON Council by President, Muhammadu Buhari will enhance professional monitoring of building sites in Abuja and across the country to ensure the minimisation of sharp practices on building projects.
