One of the Nigerians with staggering achievements, Emeritus Professor Oladipo Akinkugbe, is dead.
Akinkugbe was Nigeria’s first Professor of Medicine.
He died at the age of 86 in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday.
The late medical expert studied and taught at the University of London, Balliol College, University of Oxford England and Harvard Medical School Boston, USA.
He served as Pro-Chancellor, University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT) and was former Vice-Chancellor, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria.
Akinkugbe was former Vice-Chancellor, University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) and a former Dean of the Faculty of Medicine, University of Ibadan.
The deceased served as Chairman Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB); Chairman Planning Committee, Ondo State University and Chairman Planning Committee, University of Abuja (UNIABUJA).
He was Chairman of the Presidential Projects Implementation Committee (PPIC) on the refurbishing of Teaching Hospitals in Nigeria.
Akinkugbe personally established the Ibadan Hypertension Clinic and was also the Chairman, Vesta Healthcare Partners.
Akinkugbe practised medicine for 60 years and supervised the establishment of Africa’s pioneer clinics for hypertension and renal disorders at the UCH, Ibadan.
