President Goodluck Jonathan has approved the deployment of troops to Mali to fight insurgency in the West African State of Mali. This was made possible after the Senate gave the nod for the deployment. The troops deployed will join regional forces from Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) to form the Africa-led international Mission in Support of Mali (AFISMA).

Before leaving for Mali on Thursday, the chief of army staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Azubuike Ihejirika urged the officers and men to live up to expectations and show discipline. He also encouraged them to be courageous and loyal so as to handle the task given to them effectively while warning against acts that could bring disrepute to the operation.

Similarly Nigerian Air force deployed paratroopers to join the Special Forces from France currently battling the insurgency. The paratroopers made up of officers and men were advised by the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Vice Marshall Alex Badeh to show professionalism in their action and always abide by the rules of engagement.
