The Executive Secretary of the Nigeria Christian Pilgrim Commission, Rev Yakubu Pam has commended President Muhammadu Buhari for signing the Discrimination Against Persons with Disability (Prohibition) Act,2019.
He made this known recently in Abuja while playing host to the Executive members of the Association of People with Disability Applicants.
He affirmed that the signing of the Disability Act by the President would help to fully integrate the Persons living with disabilities in the society.
He noted that with the signing of the Disability Act which also led to the establishment of the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities would help to address the challenges facing this category of persons in the society
The NCPC boss further reaffirmed that the gesture of Mr President to sign the Disability Act and the setting up of an independent body to cater for the needs of Persons Living with Disabilities was hinged on the fact that all Nigerians should enjoy equal rights and opportunities.
He called on Nigerians to respect the dignity of persons living with disabilities.
He assured his guests that NCPC would work in tandem with the provisions in the Disability Act which provides for five percent employment opportunities against discrimination for persons living with disabilities in every organisation.
Rev Pam promised that NCPC under his watch would partner with the Association, especially in the area of advocacy.
Earlier, the leader of the delegation and South West Coordinator of the Association of People with Disability Applicants , Mr Adeusi Gbenga also applauded the President for taking the bold initiative to sign the Disability Act, 2019. According to him,” this is the first time we are having this Disability Act in Nigeria”.
He solicited the cooperation of the NCPC boss to offer their members the opportunity to work in the Commission.
Mr Gbenga reiterated that the cost of living with Disability in Nigeria is very high and as such they should be supported.
