Jos — The Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC) on Tuesday commissioned its forum office in Jos, the Plateau State capital, to handle complaints between electricity customers and electricity service providers.

The Chairman of NERC, Dr. Sam Amadi, said the Jos forum office was the tenthof its kind commissioned across the country, adding that the commission has given approval to open forum offices in all the 36 states of the federation.

Amadi explained that complaints that might come to the forum are complaints not settled at the Customer Care Units (CCU) situated in the Distribution Company.

He said the electricity providers might also launch complaints against customers.

Also speaking on the occassion, Governor of Plateau State, Jonah David Jang, asked NERC to make the issue of metering paramount stressing that “where the consumer is not sure of what he is paying for, there is element of exploitation; there is element of extortion and mistrust.”

Jang who was represented by the State Commissioner for Water Resources and Energy, Malam Idi Waziri, explained that the state was exploring rural electrification projects through the Shimankar power project aimed at supplying electricity to the Southern Senatorial zone of the state.

“We are about to sign a Memorandum of Understanding ( MoU) with investors,” he stated.

The Minister of Power, Prof. Chinedu Nebo, who was represented by Bola Laditan, said the inauguration of the forum office would give confidence to electricity consumers and serve as a stop point for resolution of all electricity disputes and complaints.
