NASS Budget Research Office will Reduce Appropriation Controversies – Rep. Timothy Golu

As the National Assembly prepare to receive the proposed 2018 Appropriation bill Tuesday, Chairman of the House of Representatives committee on Legislative Budget and Research, Hon. Golu Timothy, has said that the National Assembly Budget and Research Office (NABRO) will play a key role in reducing budget related controversies.

According to him, when NABRO is fully established, the office will make the budget consideration process less cumbersome and fast.

Golu during an interaction with journalists, Monday in Abuja, explained that the Executive arm of government would collaborate with the Legislature to ensure that annual budgetsare considered within short time.

The bill establishing NABRO has been transmitted to President Muhammadu Buhari for assent ahead of the 2018 budget presentation before a joint session of the National Assembly today.

President Muhammadu Buhari had in a letter last week requested the indulgence of both the Senate and the House to present the budget estimates.

Based on the Medium Term Expenditure Framework (MTEF) and Fiscal Strategy Paper (FSP), the Federal Government was proposing N8.6 trillion for 2018, about 15. Percent higher than that of last year, which was N7.4trn.

Sponsored in the House by Golu and other members of his committee, the bill will give NABRO the powers to critically examine annual budgets with a view to streamlining the fiscal documents.

He added that budget related issues would be a thing of the past when eventually NABRO comes into being.
