To mark World Youth Skills Day 2025, NASCO Group hosted a powerful youth empowerment event at the Sarau Event Center in Jos, Plateau State. With the theme “Youth Empowerment through AI and Digital Skills,” the gathering brought together tech leaders, innovators, policymakers, and aspiring youth to explore how technology can shape the future of work.
Welcoming participants, Alhaji Shehu Sule Nyalun, Group General Manager of NASCO, said the program was part of the company’s corporate social responsibility. “Our goal is to equip young people with essential digital skills,” he said. “This workshop is a meaningful investment into the future, and I trust it will impact every participant here.”
He expressed appreciation to the invited speakers and resource persons, applauding their readiness to share knowledge with the youth. Alhaji Nyalun emphasized that digital innovation is not just an option but a necessity if Nigerian youths are to remain relevant in a fast-changing global economy.
Dr. Cletus Bako Shurkuk, Plateau State Commissioner for Science and Technology, delivered the keynote address. He warned that millions of jobs would disappear due to automation but stressed that young people could thrive if they embrace skills in AI, cybersecurity, robotics, and digital innovation. “Don’t just consume technology,” he urged. “Create it, manage it, and lead with it.”
He commended NASCO for taking the lead in digital youth empowerment. “This initiative is timely and commendable. Government alone cannot build a digital future—we need the private sector to step in, just like NASCO is doing today,” Dr. Shurkuk added.
The event featured a panel session with four experts: Robert John, Abigail Samson Bugama, Job David Ayuba, and Amb. Ponfa Miri. Each brought a unique perspective on how young people can leverage technology for personal growth and national development.
Robert John stated that awareness is the first step. “Many young people are not even aware of these digital possibilities. A day like this opens their minds to new tools and ideas, and from there, they begin to innovate,” he said.
Amb. Ponfa Miri emphasized the importance of preparing for the Fourth Industrial Revolution. “This event shows how we can rally around young people and empower them. If other organizations follow NASCO’s example, Plateau and Nigeria will be on the right path,” he noted.
Human resource expert Abigail Samson Bugama called on young professionals to understand workplace culture and policies before taking jobs. She shared a personal story of workplace exploitation and urged youths to protect their well-being by staying informed and taking ownership of their careers.
Digital innovation leader Job David Ayuba praised the uniqueness of NASCO’s initiative. “This is one of the most prominent World Youth Skills Day events I’ve seen in Nigeria,” he said. He encouraged young people to use AI and digital tools responsibly to grow their businesses and transform the public sector.
Participants also shared their reflections. Coach Julius Owobo II said he learned to first identify roadblocks before chasing goals. He appreciated insights on understanding workplace policies and using AI tools creatively. “I now see the importance of giving back to society,” he added.
Another participant, Okwudili Julius Eluebe, said the event reinforced her desire to grow in cybersecurity and ethical hacking. “This is what gives me joy,” she said. She also learned the value of emotional intelligence and soft skills, and committed to keep learning despite limitations.
