The National Association of Jukun Wanu (NAJUWA) has extended profound condolences to the Government and people of Benue State over the tragic and ongoing violence in parts of the state, particularly the recent killings in Agatu and Idoma communities, as well as the unfortunate incident in Yelwata, Guma Local Government Area.
In a joint statement signed by its President General, Engr. Moses Amankye Adanwo, and Secretary General, Comrade Sule Musa Atase, NAJUWA expressed deep solidarity with all victims and their families, while calling for urgent, collective action to bring the bloodshed to an end.
“NAJUWA unequivocally condemns all forms of violence, which run contrary to our values as peace-loving people. However, we firmly reject attempts to implicate the Jukun people in the recurring violence in Benue State, particularly within Tiv communities,” the statement read.
The Association described recent allegations of Jukun complicity in attacks against their Tiv neighbors as baseless and inflammatory, warning that such narratives only escalate tensions and deepen existing divides.
“We urge restraint in public discourse and on social media. For instance, misleading claims circulated on April 28th and 29th, 2025, in posts by Orkuma Benjamin and Aomoty Content, respectively, have served only to fuel division. We reiterate our demand for the immediate retraction of these posts and a public apology.”
NAJUWA further disclosed that findings from a recent investigation conducted by the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Guma LGA, in collaboration with other security agencies, confirmed the non-involvement of the Jukun community in the Yelwata incident.
“In fact, members of the Jukun community in Abinsi are currently providing shelter to some displaced Tiv victims, a testament to our shared humanity and commitment to peace.”
While expressing grief alongside the Idoma, Agatu, and Tiv people, the Association outlined concrete steps toward lasting reconciliation and peace:
- Support President Bola Tinubu’s call by urging Governor Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Iormem Alia to include Jukun representatives in the proposed stakeholder committee, to ensure inclusive governance and true representation.
- Collaborate fully with security agencies and reaffirm commitment to supporting lawful investigations into all acts of violence.
- Appoint a bilingual (Tiv/English) spokesperson within the Jukun community to combat misinformation and promote interethnic understanding.
NAJUWA reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to peace, justice, and the constitutional rights of all Nigerians, urging media outlets to verify information before circulating inflammatory content.
“We call on all communities to reject narratives of division and work together in unity to combat insecurity in our region,” the statement concluded.
