One tends to wonder how Mangu LGA, one of the most peaceful and productive revenue generation LGAs in Plateau state, has in a twinkle of an eye become a safe haven for armed robbers who steal, rob, brutalize, harass, fire gunshots, rape, and sometimes kill their victims.
It started like a joke and has now spread out like wild fire. Many residents have had their houses robbed and valuables carted away. One of the most serious incidents occurred on Sunday 5th January 2014. At approx. 8:30 PM, a newly built and well patronized hotel “Treasures Island Resorts” located at the Shidyel area of the town (close to cottage hospital Mangu) was robbed by a team of armed men who according to an impeccable source wore security uniforms.

All the people chilling, dining and wining at the hotel had their phones and monies taken away. Heavy gunshots were rained as the robbers undertook their dastardly acts. The security man was tied and locked in a room, the manager of the hotel was very traumatised and in an emotion-laden voice, told ViewPointNigeria’s correspondent that all the monies realised in the day’s sales were collected along with all sorts of assorted wines and drinks. After robbing the hotel, they then proceed to rob three adjacent houses in the area to finalise their dastardly act.

This is incident has happened at the backdrop of a kidnapping activity in early December, during which a Reverend –Rev. Shwargak Bonfa was kidnapped in the Mangu Hale area (as he travelled from Pankshin to Jos). The gentleman was said to have spent over 3 weeks in the custody of the kidnappers –during which they were said to have tortured, performed juju and traditional rites on him to hypnotise and confuse him. However, after much ordeal and pain, they were said to have taken him to a forest in Taraba state and released him in the middle of the night.
It is rather unfortunate, but many cases such as these have been happening unabated lately in Mangu LGA and it is ViewPointNigeria’s position that Government must as a matter of urgency do something to curtail these dastardly activities.
