The Government of Plateau state has banned street begging and the exposure of sick persons along the streets of the state. The decision was reached after the state executive meeting that was chaired by Governor Jonah Jang in Jos the Plateau state Capital.

Pastor Abraham Yiljab who is the state commissioner for information and communication briefed journalists after the meeting. He said “The state government has observed with dismay, the influx of beggars from unknown destinations to most streets in the state. The state government is not comfortable as some of the beggars might pose a security threat to people of the state.”

The commissioner said that a ban has also been placed on the act of exposing sick people on the streets for begging alms. He said that sick people should be in the hospitals for medical care and not loitering on the streets. Yiljab said “The street is not the best place to display sick persons, but rather such persons should be taken to hospitals for medical attention. We want to warn that such practice be stopped henceforth and all those involved should take note or face the full wrath of the law.”

He added that preparations has reached top gear for the conduct of the Local Government elections in 15 out of the 17 Local Government councils and called on politicians to follow the electoral guidelines.
