and the Ambassadors of Dialogue, Climate and Reintegration Abuja on Tuesday 30th April 2019 organized a one day mandatory training on safety disaster prevention for managers and employees in industries

The facilitators Mr. Richard Inyankume, Adamawa State Coordinator of IDMSS, Program Lead, IDMSS Adamawa, Mr Daniel Kwaghgande and Mr Akosu Moses, Ambassadors of Dialogue, Climate and Reintegration, Abuja said “According to global disaster index, 42% of disaster events that happen yearly are man-made disasters. This includes major fires or explosions in industries, factories or warehouses .

They said In Nigeria, industrial disasters and employee accidents are common. Most of these are caused by poor safety culture, substandard facility construction or design, or lack of fire prevention or anti-explosion fittings that may degenerate into scorching down buildings to claim thousands of lives aside monetary losses.

Most industrial disasters have been largely attributed to negligence on the part of managers, staff incompetence, poor safety and workplace practices, carelessness or poor maintenance/housekeeping which causes colossal damages to assets and injuries to persons.
Due to increasing exposures to risks at the work place, there is need for capacity building on disaster mitigation and to prepare employees as first responders to disasters. When workers in industries are properly trained and informed about appropriate safety and disaster management practices, accidents and disasters will be reduced to the barest minimum. It becomes imperative to strengthen the capacity of managers and employees on disaster risk reduction at the workplace so as to protect lives and secure industrial assets.

The importance of continuous training and re-training of employees in industries on occupational safety and disaster prevention has been recognized by the Institute of Disaster Management and Safety Science (IDMSS) and the Chartered Institute of Safety Managers, U.S.A, the Ambassadors of Dialogue, Climate and Reintegration (DCR Ambassadors) and the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN). This prompted the conduct of a one day mandatory training on occupational safety and disaster prevention for managers and employees of industries in Plateau State which shall be replicated as well in other states in the North Central geo-political zone of the country.

The Executive Secretary of the Manufacturers Association of Nigeria MAN, Jos branch which covers 8 states, (Benue, Bauchi, Plateau, Gombe, Taraba, Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states said the aim and objectives of the training were to support staff capacity for safety and disaster response.

To expose participants to contemporary international frameworks for safety and disaster risk reduction, as well as mitigation, and post-disaster response and recovery.

To increase participants’ knowledge of personal work space safety.

He further said it is to support staff capacity in terms of disaster prevention and response and to reduce workplace accident and enhanced disaster preparedness.

The training took place at TomRuk Multi verse, Rayfield, Jos Plateau state.

Some of the participants includes staff of Grand cereals Oils and mills LTD , ECWA central pharmacy LTD and Accu- Track Nig Ltd..
