The member representing Barkin Ladi/Riyom Federal Constituency of Plateau State at the National Assembly, Rep. Barr. ID Gyang Sounded alarm against violation of fundamental Rights of Citizens especially the right to freedom of thought, conscience and religion and calls for the release of Leah Sharibu and 112 Chibok girls abducted by Boko Haram.
Barr. I. D. Gyang was lending his voice to what he termed the pathetic motion on Leah Sharibu and the remaining 112 Chibok Girls by the Member Representing Damboa, Chibok and Gwoza Federal Constituency of Borno State, Dr. Asabe Vilita Bashir.
Rep. I. D. Gyang urged the Federal Government and security agencies to make the rescue of Leah Sharibu and the remaining 112 Chibok School Girls its priority.
He said the continuous holding of Miss Leah Sharibu in captivity by Boko Haram has attracted wide national and global condemnations.
“As the nation marks 4 years since the Chibok Girls were abducted, 112 of them are still in captivity, Mr. Speaker” he said.
Barr. I. D. Gyang said report from the media indicates that very few of the Chibok Girls may still be alive.
“It is disturbing and calls for expeditious action by the security and government to secure and enforce the release of the remaining girls” he also said.
Barr. ID said the anniversary is an opportunity to reflect on the only Dapchi Girl that is languishing in captivity, Leah Sharibu.
“Leah is still held captive in clear violation of her rights; right of freedom of thought, conscience and religion as enshrined in Section 38 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 as amended” he went further to buttress.
“As Parliaments, We MUST resist any conduct that erodes the rights of citizens especially the right to conscience, freedom of thought and religion, the only reason for which Leah Sharibu is still held in captivity” Rep. I. D. Gyang opined.
He went further to say any nation that will not allow its citizens to exercise their fundamental human rights is a nation that is heading towards destruction.
He said he is appealing to government to speedily ensure that expeditious actions are taken to secure and enforce the release of Leah Sharibu and the other 112 Chibok Girls.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara has told President Muhammadu Buhari to ensure the freedom of the rest of the Chibok girls still in Boko Haram captivity and Leah Sharibu, the Christian girls still held by the insurgents before the general election.
Members of the House were embittered as they debated a motion on the fate of the Chibok girls yesterday.
They said that it was embarrassing that four years on, the government was unable to rescue them from Boko Haram.
They also said that government’s success in negotiating the release of the majority of the Dapchi schoolgirls would be rated as “nothing,” so long as the last girl, Leah Sharibu, remained in captivity.
They debated on the motion moved by the member representing Damboa/Chibok Federal Constituency of Borno State, Asabe Bashir.
