Langtang North Council Denies Involvement in Remand of Nansel Lar, Urges Respect for Due Process

LANGTANG, PLATEAU STATE – The Langtang North Local Government Council has distanced itself from the remand of Mr. Nansel Selnan Lar, describing as “false and misleading” allegations that the Executive Chairman of the Council, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem, ordered or influenced his detention.

In a press release signed by the Chief Press Secretary to the Executive Chairman, Kum Precious, the Council said it had observed with concern the circulation of statements and social media commentaries linking Mr. Lar’s remand to the Executive Chairman.

According to the Council, Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem merely exercised his constitutional right by submitting a petition to the Nigeria Police Force on issues he considered worthy of investigation, stressing that the petition remains with the police and has not been filed before any court of competent jurisdiction.

The Council maintained that the investigation, arraignment, application for remand, and prosecution of Mr. Lar are being handled solely by the Nigeria Police Force in line with its statutory responsibilities, with the courts exercising their constitutional role independently.

It therefore dismissed claims that the Executive Chairman or the Local Government Council directed or procured the remand of Mr. Lar, insisting that such allegations are inaccurate and unsupported by facts.

Addressing claims that Mr. Lar was being persecuted for demanding accountability, the Council stated that it has consistently responded to his requests for information through appropriate administrative channels and in accordance with established legal and administrative procedures.
“The suggestion that Mr. Lar is being persecuted simply for requesting accountability does not fairly reflect the history of engagement between him and the Council,” the statement noted, adding that official records show his requests were acknowledged and addressed.

The Council reaffirmed its commitment to transparency, accountability, and responsible governance, describing these principles as central to the administration of Hon. Pirfa Jingfa Tyem.

It also reiterated its respect for the constitutional independence of the Nigeria Police Force and the Judiciary, stating that the Local Government neither interferes with criminal investigations nor seeks to influence judicial proceedings.

While acknowledging the right of citizens and civil society organisations to express their views and advocate for causes they consider just, the Council urged members of the public to ensure that such advocacy is based on verified facts and does not undermine confidence in public institutions or ongoing legal processes.

The statement further said the Executive Chairman remains focused on delivering good governance, strengthening public institutions, improving infrastructure, expanding opportunities for citizens, and promoting peace and development across Langtang North Local Government Area.

The Council called on all stakeholders to allow the relevant institutions to carry out their constitutional responsibilities without undue interference or misinformation while allowing the judicial process to run its full course.
