Jos Residents Decries Open Defecation in Plateau State, Calls for Legislation Criminalizing Act

Some residents of Jos have called for a legislation to criminalize open defecation in Plateau state.

Contributing on Thursday’s edition of KT 103.9FM flagship programme, “the Wake up Call,” via social media, they said Houses without toilet should be sanctioned and a fine be introduced on defaulters.

Commenting on Facebook, Vina Theo Adams who wondered why house owners still build houses without toilet, said though ending open defecation is the responsibility of all, lawmakers must make laws criminalizing defaulters.

Supporting Adams’ position, a user with the name, Dimas Bala said without a law in place to prohibit those who defecate openly, the issue will not end

Hepzibath Vincent on her part recounted how some persons who practice open defecation threaten to make her life miserable in the community if she reports to the authority’s and how some community leaders have not given the issue attention.

She called on community leaders to take the issue seriously.

Philip Speed Dungson on his part said as long as animals defecates openly, it will be difficult to stop open defecation and called for the strengthening of the state’s environmental laws.

He equally advised political office holders to intervene in building multiple toilets especially in rural communities.

Another user, Pan’an Gubam who also supported the above point said every building plan must be approved by the JMDB or the Ministry of environment and duly certified to have all sewage management facilities in place.

He said government must strengthen their supervisory roles to ensure absolute compliance.
