Basking in the Euphoria of Nigeria’s 53rd independence, the Governor of Plateau State, Da Jonah Jang has granted amnesty to 5 inmates serving time for various offences in the Jos prisons. The beneficiaries of this rare gubernatorial gesture included: Domchang Jatau, Pankyes Yakubu, Jerry Arin, Iyeh Arama and Peter Gazi. They were urged by the Governor to take their freedom as a mark of pardon and a call to go and re-integrate themselves into society.

In a statement by the Governor’s Director of Press Affairs, Mr. James Mannok, the Governor averred that he was exercising the powers conferred on him by section 212 of the Nigerian constitution and that it was done in the spirit of independence.
This would not be the first time section 212 of the Nigerian constitution is being implemented by a serving Governor. It would be recalled that past administrations have also extended similar gestures to convicted inmates.
