Insecurity: Over 5,000 displaced in Plateau – Legislator

A legislator, Solomon Maren, who represents Mangu/Bokkos federal constituency on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has said that over 5,000 persons were last week displaced in one night when a group of armed militia invaded a small town at the border between Mangu and Barkin Ladi local government areas of Plateau State.

Rep. Maren told Daily Trust on Sunday that penultimate week’s attack on Kadunung town, where about 20 persons were reportedly killed and dozens of houses burnt, left over 5,000 people homeless.

‘’It is very unfortunate that people were killed in Kadunung village, with many displaced with various degrees of injury. Over 5,000 people were displaced after their houses were burnt. They fled in different directions, but we have been able to camp most of them in four different locations,” he lamented.

He told our reporter that he was planning to sponsor motions which would ensure that adequate security measures are taken to safeguard the people.
“Mangu is part of my constituency, and anything that affects an individual in this locality affects me directly.  These attacks and counter attacks are not part of our culture as a people. We must sheathe our swords and embrace peace. We have to return to the old Plateau, which was the home of peace and hospitality,’’ he said.
