The Independent National Electoral Commission has fixed November 28 for by-election into the vacant Quan’Pan North Plateau State House of Assembly seat.
A statement on Friday in Jos, the Plateau State capital, said the seat became vacant following the death of Geoffrey Dashe, who represented the constituency in the House.
The statement was signed by Chinyere Okorie on behalf of the Head of Voter Education and Publicity of the Commission, a copy of which was obtained by the News Agency of Nigeria.
The statement said: “The conduct of the by-election has become necessary owing to the death of Mr Geoffrey Dashe, who represented the constituency … he died on August 25.
“Dashe before his death was the Deputy Majority Leader of the Plateau House of Assembly and House Committee Chairman on Culture and Tourism.
“The late legislator was elected under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party.”
It said said only political parties that participated in the last elections would be allowed to field candidates for the by-election.
The statement by INEC further said: “Only the three political parties that fielded candidates during the main elections will be allowed to participate in the by-election.
“The All Progressives Congress and the Mega Progressives Peoples Party shall re-submit their candidates’ names, while the PDP is required by law to conduct a fresh primary and field a candidate.”
The statement said INEC had fixed November 12 as the deadline for the submission of names of candidates.
