INTERVIEW GRANTED TO REPORTER OF LIGHT BEARER PUBLICATION BY REP ID GYANG AFTER PAYING A VISIT TO VICTIMS OF SOPP GUN SHOTS AT PLATEAU HOSPITAL ON SATURDAY 4/11/17.
Interview Question
1. How did you feel when you saw their condition?
ANSWER:
It was a feeling of disbelief and frustration that the very
Security agents that were deployed to secure the Sopp community now constitute a grave security threat to the same people they were deployed to protect.
How else could one describe the shooting and killing of village civilians protesting the dead of young boys masterminded by the soldiers at the Sopp checkpoint?
This ugly development has become a recurring decimal characteristic of breaches of human rights by some operatives within the military.
It is unfortunate and dastardly!
2). How would you describe the actions of the security agents?
ANSWER:
The action is unprofessional, unethical and constitute an abuse of the victims human rights. It is also a clear violation of the rules of engagement that guides the operations of the military whenever they are deployed on internal security.
Even after the victim SS1 female student gallantly resisted repeated sexual harassment, her glaring vulnerability notwithstanding, the predator(soldier) went for her life and would have killed her if not for an act of God that miraculously saved her life as the killer bullet got her in the thigh.
This matter must be thoroughly investigated by the military to ensure that bad eggs within the rank and file are weeded out if the poor human rights rating of the Nigerian Military by Amnesty International is to be ameliorated and corrected.
3. For the lady whose operation has been suspended due to lack of funds, what have you to say in view of the growing public outcry for the mandatory shouldering of her bills by the soldier who shot her?
ANSWER:
We have no option but to step in. In this regard, I am appealing to the state and Local governments to assist as we are faced with many other cases of victims of isolated attacks in addition to malicious destruction of farm crops in Barikin Ladi and Riyom LGs.
4. Your constituents need some words of assurance that their security concerns are being taken care of, what can you tell them?
ANSWER:
It is the primary constitutional responsibility of the Nigerian government to secure and guarantee the safety and well being of all citizens.
The security agents including the military, Police, etc are the state apparatus for this purpose. Their presence and operations is suppose to give citizens confidence and assurance of security and not the other way round.
The safety of my Constituents and indeed other Nigerian citizens can only be guaranteed if and when the security agents undertake and carry out their responsibility dispassionately without sentiment, bias and prejudice, in conformity with professional ethics and rules of engagement.
