NOTICE OF MOTION

A CALL ON THE PLATEAU STATE GOVERNMENT TO DIRECT THE MINISTRY OF HEALTH TO ADDRESS THE INCESSANT PROLIFERATION OF UNACCREDITED HEALTH TRAINING INSTITUTIONS IN PLATEAU.

Health Training Institutions (HTI) are specialized institutions consciously established to provide Human Capacity Development (HCD) in health and related disciplines. Areas within health profession encompass medical laboratory science, pharmacy, medicine, nursing, anatomy, physiology, environmental health, physical health, social health, emotional health, intellectual health, community health and even spiritual health designed to promote, maintain, improve or restore health. Apart from the knowledge and skills to be obtained from these HTIs, leadership principles are to be transferred from lecturers and other Staff to students trained in these Institutions. It is unfortunate that the practices seen in these proliferated unaccredited HTIs is already faulty.

Following the oversight conducted by the House Committee on Health to different Public Health Training Institutions in Plateau State, the Committee discussed issues on proliferation of unaccredited HTIs across the State where graduates from these HTIs were not properly trained because they lack the facilities and manpower for such trainings, thereby churning out half-backed health personnel and encouraging quackery in the system which portends great danger to citizens, the State and the country at large.

Now therefore, I call on this House to resolve to call on the Plateau State Government to direct the Ministry of Health and Higher Education to set up Monitoring and Assessment Committee, to regularly visit all those affected in conjunction with their various regulatory bodies with the view to assess their standards and stability for operation in the State in order to stem the tide of quackery and unwarranted poor quality health delivery in the State and the Nation.
