Governor Mutfwang Resigns from PDP, Signals Major Political Shift in Plateau

Plateau State Governor, Barr. Caleb Manasseh Mutfwang, has resigned from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP), a development that marks a notable shift in the state’s political configuration and adds to the pattern of party realignments in Nigeria’s political space.

In a letter dated December 29, 2025, addressed to the PDP Chairman of Ampang West Ward, the Governor formally announced his resignation.

In the letter, he expressed appreciation to the party for providing him with the opportunity to participate in the democratic process and acknowledged the support he received from party leaders, members, and supporters during his time in the PDP.

Governor Mutfwang was elected in 2023, when he defeated the then ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) in Plateau State, ending the party’s eight-year tenure. His exit from the PDP and planned entry into the APC reflects the dynamic nature of party affiliations in the country’s multiparty system.

A statement issued by the Governor’s Director of Press and Public Relations, Dr. Gyang Bere, confirmed that Governor Mutfwang is expected to formally join the APC on Friday, January 2, 2026. According to the statement, the formal registration and presentation of his APC membership card will take place at the Victoria Gowon Hall, Government House, Little Rayfield, Jos, after which he will proceed to the party’s state secretariat at Kalwa House, Yakubu Gowon Way, to engage with party leaders and members.

The defection is likely to have implications for political alignments within Plateau State, particularly among elected officials, party structures, and supporters across both parties. It may also influence legislative cooperation and policy coordination between the state and the federal government, where the APC holds power.

Observers note that party defections by sitting governors are not uncommon in Nigeria and are often shaped by a combination of governance considerations, political strategy, and broader national developments. How this development will affect party strength, governance priorities, and future electoral outcomes in Plateau State will become clearer in the coming months.
