Gov. Lalong Names Govt. House Auditorium After Mrs. Victoria Gowon, Meets Youth Bodies in Plateau State

The Executive Governor of Plateau State, His Excellency Rt. Hon. Simon Bako Lalong has named a New Auditorium at Government House after the Wife of Former Head of State, Her Excellency Mrs. Victoria Hansatu Yakubu Gowon.
He described her as a shining example to Nigeria’s Youths who supported her husband who did creditably well to the Nation. He said naming the Auditorium after her to appreciate her supportive roles to national development and admonished the Youths to emulate her.

While addressing the Youths, Gov. Lalong said though the times are challenging, there is need to interface with the youths to discuss critical issues affecting the State.

He charged the youths to focus on building a stronger and peaceful Plateau State saying his administration is concerned about youth empowerment through strategic human capital development and is partnering with ITF and GIZ to achieve that.

He called on the youths to Learn how to build than to destroy.

“I am in support of ending SARS and at the forefront for the reformation of the Nigerian Police Force.” Gov. Lalong said.

He promised to continue to engage the youths in a more robust manner in order to address the communication gap.

In his opening remarks, the Plateau State Honorable Commissioner of Youths and Sports Development, Hon. Victor Lapang described the Youths as agents of positive change and have the capacity to change the narratives of happenings in the Nation. He said the future of the State and Nation lies with the youth and underscored the need for them to guard same jealously through positive contributions.

The interactive session brought together top government functionaries, Leaders of Coalition of Plateau State Youth Ethnic Nationalities, Plateau Youth Council, YOWICAN Plateau State, Muslim Youth Group and Leaders of other Youth Groups in the State who made presentations.

A Representative of the #ENDSARS Protesters made presentation in which he condemned all acts of vandalism and looting across the State/Nation.

He called on government to arrest and prosecute all those who were involved in the wanton destruction and looting of public and private property.
He table some demands on government some of which were;

  • Justice for all victims of brutality and extra-judicial killings. He said the sittings of the judicial panel be stream live for the public.
  • Appropriate Compensation to Victims and their families through establishment of Victims Support Funds.
  • Demand for increase in the Salary of police personnel and improvement in their general welfare.
  • Personnel should undergo psychological examination to determine how fit they are.
  • Urge government to fulfill the promise of setting Mobile Security Outfit in villages.
  • Declare State of emergency be declared on education and increase budgetary allocation to education including overhaul of the education sector.
  • Carry out massive infrastructural development.
  • Demand the resignation of all corrupt office holders
  • Cut in cost of governance
  • No peaceful protester is arrested or harassed by government.

He said the demands should be met within 90 days or the protesters will return to their peaceful protest.
