FROM THE SEAS TO THE STARS: COMMANDER YILCHINI JAN BIDA (RTD) HONOURED WITH “MALAM BIT” CHIEFTAINCY TITLE
D.M Long’gul reports
In a vibrant display of culture and communal appreciation, the Wuseli Community of Pankshin Local Government Area has officially conferred the prestigious chieftaincy title of “Malam Bit”—meaning “The Rising Star”—on Commander Yilchini Jan Bida (Rtd).
The ceremony, which drew dignitaries, community leaders, and supporters of the LIGHTS Movement, marked a significant milestone for the retired naval officer, whose transition from military service to community leadership has been described as seamless and impactful.
The title “Malam Bit” was not chosen by happenstance. According to community elders, the designation reflects a leader who provides direction and hope during times of uncertainty.
For Commander Bida, the honour serves as a formal validation of his “post-uniform” life. Since retiring from a distinguished career in the Nigerian Navy, Bida has pivoted his focus toward:
- Community Mentorship: Guiding the next generation of youth in Plateau State.
- Nation-Building: Promoting civic responsibility and peace-building initiatives.
- Philanthropy: Consistent dedication to local development and the welfare of retired service members.
Leadership Beyond the Uniform
The conferment highlights a growing sentiment in Plateau State: that true leadership is a lifelong commitment. Speakers at the event noted that Bida has carried the discipline of the Armed Forces into the heart of the community, proving that a legacy of service transcends the barracks.
“This honour is not just for the man, but for the values he represents,” noted a representative of the Wuseli traditional council. “Commander Bida has shown that honour is earned daily through integrity and a steadfast commitment to the common good.”
The LIGHTS Movement Gains Momentum
As the “Captain” of the LIGHTS Movement, this recognition is seen as a symbolic boost for Bida’s vision for a better society. The movement, which advocates for vision, responsibility, and hope, sees the “Rising Star” title as a reinforcement of their core mission.
The event concluded with traditional rites and celebrations, as well-wishers from across Nigeria expressed confidence that this new chapter would further amplify Bida’s influence in regional and national development.
