Plateau state Governor, Da Jonah Jang has advised Nigerians to engage in regular exercise so as to enable them to stay fit, healthy and live longer. The Governor who was represented by the Commissioner for Solid Minerals Development, Mr Agwom Sani-Zandi made the advice at the 25th edition of Olympic Day Run in Jos.

Jang said that exercise was crucial for the body and advised people to know their health conditions before embarking on strenuous exercise. He said “Always check your health conditions with your doctors before you embark on any exercise, don’t go into a strenuous activity that your body cannot accommodate”.

The Governor added that his administration embarked on massive projects in the sports sector in recognition of its importance. He said “The construction of FIFA standard stadium on Zaria Road is in recognition of this fact and we are also going to construct a multipurpose sports complex.

“We have also directed that applications for the establishment of schools must be accompanied by provision for sporting facilities. In the absence of such facilities, no approval will be given for the establishment of an academic institution. This is to enable students and teachers to participate in sports, apart from their academic endeavours,” he said.

The Governor stated that his administration had given instruction for the reintroduction of school competitions abandoned overtime. This he said will help in discovering talents that would be developed to represent the state and country at national and international competitions.

Plateau Athletics Association Chairman, Mr Kichime Gotau said that the event was an initiative of the World Olympic Committee. He said the committee earmarked the day for stakeholders in the sporting world to create awareness on the importance of sports.

Marketing Manager of Grand Cereals Nigeria Ltd, Mr Tope Banjo said that exercise was important for human beings. He said “We have been sponsoring the annual event for the past five years and we will continue to do that as long as our brand is affecting the society positively”.
