ENDSARS: Berom Educational and Cultural Organization Calls for Restraint, Pleads for Calm

BECO CALLS FOR RESTRAINT, PLEADS FOR CALM.

That these are usually difficult and challenging times for the country in general and our dear state in particular, is far from an understatement.

From all indications, the protests which started very peacefully and orderly, until the eventual takeover by miscreants and hoodlums, appear to have been least expected, by all.

  1. We note with some appreciable measure of satisfaction and relief, steps being taken by the authorities to bring life to normalcy and ensure the restoration of economic and social activities in the Jos/Bukuru metropolis.
  2. For us as a nation, this turn of events for the worse, characterized by wanton destruction and vandalisation of public and private properties and the carting away of same, was unfortunate, to say the least. This, sad to note, was a remarkable deviation or departure from what the organizers of the protests may have had in mind. This moreso, for us, as it came on the heels of renewed killings in our villages and the mowing down of farms by Fulani herdsmen.
  3. While this sad turn of events placed great demands on our youth, in particular and our people in general, it equally brought a hitherto unseen orgy of lawlessness too close to our door steps, for comfort. Its influence can only be imagined.
  4. It’s a fact that our people in many ways became victims and, or suffered some casualties, in one way or the other. We note with sadness that the casualties included some of our women hawking around the vicinity of the First Bank, Bukuru, among others, in the Tuesday (last week) attacks. We commiserate with all that may have found themselves in these and other categories. We pray for quick recovery, restoration and normalcy.
  5. While we support government and the security authorities in all ways possible, to ensure that normalcy is restored in the fastest time possible, we appeal to our people to remain law abiding by observing the curfew protocol to the letter. Ensure that you are indoors and safe. Our youth must not in anyway be lured into acts of lawlessness, as this is not in our calling and nature. We demand that if any of our people are in possession of items they do not rightfully own, let them immediately hand them to their community leaders, for onward return to the authorities.
  6. Please be alert and report all suspicious movements and persons in your neighborhood, immediately to both traditional and civil authorities. With our cooperation, government will come on top of the situation in no distant time.

Chollom Gyang
Secretary General.
