Hon. Dung Mwantep Tari, the candidate of the representative of Plateau North Senatorial District, Jonah David Jang, has been elected the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman for Jos South Local Government Area of Plateau State.
Tari emerged at the Local Government Congress of the PDP, which was postponed due to violent protests.
The congress was conducted amidst tight security.
The protesters claimed that Jang, a former Governor of the state, forced in his list into the ward delegates lists, with the names of some of those already pencilled down for the congress removed.
The ward delegates usually elect party executives at the council level.
At the final conduct of the LG Congresses at the PDP State Secretariat in Jos on Sunday amidst tight
security, Tari clinched the ticket after polling 62 votes.
He defeated Hon. Dalyop Pam, who was the candidate of the member Representing Jos South/Jos East Constituency in the National Assembly, Hon. Edward Pwajok.
Pam scored 34 votes.
The atmosphere before the conduct of the election on Sunday was tensed as security agents had to battle to control the protesters who came from Giring and Zawan B Ward.
Their delegates were excluded from the election.
Former Senator Davou Zang, who was a delegate and member of Jang’s camp, while speaking with journalists after the election, said he was happy with the outcome.
Zang revealed that the PDP will peacefully produce a former Minister of Sport, Hon. Damishi Sango, during the State Congress as the Chairman of the party in the state.
Also speaking, the member representing Jos South Constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Nyam Dareng, said the peaceful conduct of the congress demonstrated that the PDP is very strong the state.
It would be recalled that congress was on Thursday postponed in Jos South Local Government Area of the state as a result of protests by aggrieved ward delegates whose names were removed from the original lists billed to feature at the council congresses to elect new executives.
It was gathered that all the elected officials of the PDP LG were immediately sworn-in in at the PDP Secretariat by Barrister Gyang Zi.
Tari promised to run an all exclusive government where all aggrieved members will be accepted back into the party.
