Mrs. Dorcas Gwani of the Federal Radio Corporation of Nigeria (FRCN) has emerged Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Plateau State Council, after securing a decisive victory in an election held at the NUJ Secretariat in Jos.
Gwani polled 25 votes to defeat her closest challenger, Douglas Francis of Arise News, who scored nine votes in the keenly watched election. Mrs. Lola Bello of the Voice of Nigeria (VON) was returned unopposed.
The election, conducted by the National Secretariat of the NUJ Zone D, was held following months of controversy surrounding the leadership of the chapel and the disputed election conducted in July this year.
The rerun was supervised by the Credentials Committee constituted for the exercise, with Miss Patience Aliyu formally declaring the results at the NUJ Secretariat in Jos, the Plateau State capital.
The election brought to an end a prolonged leadership tussle that had left members of the chapel awaiting a fresh opportunity to settle the matter through a recognised electoral process.
In her acceptance remarks, the newly elected Chairman, Mrs. Dorcas Gwani, commended the Electoral Committee and members of the chapel for their participation in the exercise, pledging to work towards unity and the collective progress of journalists.
Gwani said her administration would seek to chart a new course for the Correspondents Chapel, stressing the need for members to put the differences of the past behind them and work together to strengthen the union and advance the welfare and professional interests of journalists in Plateau State.
